It’s 9:10 am and John Michael Reza is ready for his weekly lesson at Project R.I.D.E. in Elk Grove. He’s wearing a riding helmet with his name printed on the back and worn cowboy boots. Despite the occasional loud whinny, it’s serene inside the arena. It smells of wood shavings and horses.

Enormous clouds stood out against the spring sky as herders encouraged about 1,200 sheep (and a lone goat) to move from one grazing spot to the next via a suburban street in Elk Grove. The herders had assistance from removable fences, ATVs, and Bart, the livestock guard dog.

Let me introduce you to Kelly Siefkin. She’s vice president of communications and marketing for Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. She talks fast, and is quick with numbers and statistics, so I’m struggling to keep up. Today, she’s wearing a green patterned dress, with green earrings and black flats, and carrying her cell phone. We’re touring the food bank campus on Bell Avenue—110,000 square feet on 12 acres. It’s a big facility, but the food bank feeds a lot of hungry people in and around the farm-to-fork capital.
